Why Your Supplement Routine Might Be Working Against You

Walk into any pharmacy in Bangkok and you’ll find entire aisles of supplements. Omega-3s. Vitamin D. Magnesium. Ashwagandha. Collagen. Most people taking them are doing so based on generic advice, social media trends, or a general feeling that more is better. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to optimize. The problem is doing it blind.

Supplements work when they address a real deficiency. They don't when they don't. The only way to know the difference is to measure what your body actually needs.

What the research actually says

A comprehensive review published in Nutrients synthesized findings from dozens of studies on biomarker-guided supplementation. The conclusion was clear: indiscriminate supplement use often leads to reduced efficacy, adverse effects, and safety concerns. Taking vitamin D when you’re already sufficient does nothing useful. Taking folate without knowing your MTHFR gene variant may be counterproductive. Zinc in excess impairs copper absorption. The interaction effects are real and well documented. [1]

The same review showed that when supplementation is guided by actual biomarker data — your blood levels, your metabolic patterns, your specific deficiencies — outcomes improve significantly. You get the right intervention for your body, not a population-level guess.

A clinical study published on PubMed Central in late 2025 went further: a 12-week biomarker-guided supplementation protocol produced clinically meaningful reductions in CRP, ferritin, and homocysteine across all age and sex groups tested. The authors concluded that chronic inflammation is not only measurable but modifiable with a precision-based approach. [2]

Personalized nutrition outperforms generic advice

A meta-analysis published in Food & Function (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2026) reviewed 24 randomized controlled trials on personalized nutrition. The finding: personalized nutrition guided by blood biomarkers and lifestyle data consistently improved dietary quality and produced significant improvements in HbA1c, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity, compared to standard dietary guidelines. [3]

A separate trial published in Nature Medicine comparing a personalized dietary program to standard guidelines found that personalization — guided by baseline biological data — led to better adherence and better outcomes. [4]

The principle is straightforward. Your body is not average. Your supplement and nutrition plan shouldn’t be either.

How Aion Health approaches this differently

Every recommendation in your Aion Health report is grounded in what your blood data actually shows. If your B12 is low, we tell you. If your vitamin D is already optimal, we don’t add more. If your homocysteine is elevated and your B12 explains why, we connect the dots and give you a protocol that addresses the root cause — not just the symptom.

We also track what changes. When you retest, we can see whether the interventions worked, adjust what needs adjusting, and leave alone what’s already moving in the right direction. That’s the difference between supplementing and supplementing intelligently.

Your protocol is built on your data, not on guesswork. See what we test →
